I live in a top floor apartment and we are being invaded by black garden ants. I can only follow their trail outside so far and have no idea where their nest is.

How far do ants travel from their nest, could their nest be somewhere inside the building?

How long ants travel depends a lot on the species. Are you sure that you are dealing with Lasius niger (often called the Black garden ant)? Also, to get rid of garden ants the small pucks/boxes with toxic pellets that the ants bring back to their nest is often very effective (it kills of the queen). –  fileunderwater Dec 3 '13 at 16:27
@fileunderwater I am totally not sure what type of ants they are, they look like small black ants (very helpful isn't it), yes I use a product called ant rid, it does that, I feel a bit mean to kill them all, but they are actually starting to destroy things, like appliances. –  user4693 Dec 3 '13 at 21:05
Someone could identify the species if you will post a picture of them ! –  biogirl Dec 6 '13 at 9:43
