Are there any BAM file viewers that will work on authenticated ftp urls with username/password combination?

For example, something like this:

~/myfavouritebamviewer view ftp://username:password@my.ftp.site/file.bam

The reason why I am asking is because there may be cases where people want to query the bam files remotely and still keep the files secured, under minimal infrastructure requirements.

is it not possible to download the file locally? Or alternatively ssh onto your server? I don't know of any programs that are designed to negotiate with FTPs before viewing a file there – Luke Jun 12 '12 at 14:49

Ok, I see. It would be useful if you could 'preview' a file this way, but I'm not sure it's possible. The easiest way I can see is keeping a BAM viewer on your server, and using a SSH client to view in the terminal – Luke Jun 12 '12 at 16:16
