I know that scopolamine has rapid and robust antidepressant effects in a few placebo-controlled trials but I can't seem to find out how exactly, even just potential mechanisms would be great if they had been proposed. My guess is that perhaps similarly to in the substantia nigra where acetylcholine and dopamine have opposing actions perhaps in mood-regulating regions of the brain they may too have opposing roles.
