γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA for short) is the chief inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system (CNS). It is an amino acid that is synthesised in the mammals from glutamate (the chief excitatory neurotransmitter in the mammalian CNS) which in itself is synthesised from L-glutamine.
