comment Is there life on other planets and if so how frequent?
Poshpaws, good answer. As I understand we can only "look" into the past, since cosmologically speaking light is really slow. Light also disperses and becomes incoherent with long distances. "Simple" cellular life seems to be an evolutionary prerequisite, and they are not in the habit of sending out powerful radiotransmissions into space (i.e. weak-point of the SETI Proj.). There is also no reason why life should have terraformed a planet to the point of being spectroscopically detectable in the albedo. A lower bound on the number of habitable planets in a galaxy like ours, would be great.

comment What does orbital mean in orbital frontal cortex?
This belongs to Stack's English section. But surely you know the term orb. As a wild guess, judging from the 'al' in front'al', or later/lateral, I would say the postfix 'al' indicates position-relatedness.

@hello_there_andy I think the concept of homeotic genes / Hox genes will fascinate you as much as learning about Symmetry in EvoDevo.

comment Is it possible to increase lifespan through controlled evolution?
The well quantifiable subject of say e.coli evolution is a totally different matter than say human evolution on aging, no less. This subject in the way it is phrased may be better suited for skeptics.SE (which is meant to discuss the information provided by notable sources).

On a less serious sidenote: I know Francis Crick was an advocate of his brain@40Hz theory. / I would advocate for the Sceptics.SE site, which deals with scrutinizing notable sources...

comment Are there any substance that are more dangerous at low dose than at higher dose?
No. The influence of dose–response relationship on toxicity is one of the fundamental properties of (bio)chemistry...?!?

comment Are there any substance that are more dangerous at low dose than at higher dose?
Correct, I didn't include a specific example only an example mechanism. Substances acting differently at different levels is well known within the concerned fields of science. Substances/Drugs which are toxic at low levels cannot be approved nor are they generally appealing for studies. Substance's "dualism" can offset the LD50. The post also doesn't discuss how substances can be toxic at low dose or discerns entantiomeric purity (e.g. thalidomide) and/or entantiomer-specific pathways. Specific examples may best be extrapolated from systems-biological and/or chemotherapeutics literature...

comment How are babies born without a brain?
good catch! I find the formation of the eyesockets striking. I am puzzled whether this is within the range of developmental plasticity as the result from different biomechanical forces due to craniosynostosis (premature skull fusion) OR if mutant genes (and/or pleiotrophies) are involved. OMIM unfortunately shows a practical lack of animal models. On a sidenote, the related spina bifida is known to interfere with the "eye" (opthalmic) devleopment....

@Andrei Initially I wanted to explain that in the post as well and include storage conditions. But I consider it best to just ask one question at a time. Regardless, did you have consistently success w. long-term fridge storage?

@RoryM I heard about it in the great IMAX movie Legends of Flight (2010). Subsequently, I felt compelled to at least verify this online. Indeed, very interesting!

@RoryM You point towards an stackoverflow-thread, yet there is a meta-site for this biology community. I put this issue up for discussion on meta. Till then please regard the editing guidelines. thanks.

Unless it is explicitly prohibited, I will prefer that formatting. Thanks for understanding. I consider bold formatting to be more out of place. Different strokes for different folks...
