Graduate student at Northwestern University studying bio sciences and BIGG DATAAAAA; still know my electrical engineering though.

  • Learning:
    • Python (+ wxPython, PIL Image, others),
    • PowerShell
    • Java (on Android platform)
  • Know C on embedded well (what's a file? stream? :P)
  • Used to know HTML (sort-of now), CSS (less-so...), JScript (no.) At least I was able to forget most of this stuff just in time for AJAX to become useful. (Because it's totally different from DHTML...)

I like stout, esp. oatmeal stout. Gin and tonic if we're talking mixed drinks. Also like Portal (hell, all Valve games), and would kill a bus full of baby nuns with fire if Gabe would release Half-Life 3 already.

comment Why have humans evolved much more quickly than other animals?
I don't understand your last question; evolution is largely directed by genetics, a modified organ doesn't pass itself along (just as amputees don't have limbless children).

@MatthewPatrickCashatt it seems like you're coming at it from a fairly anthropocentric view which stoicfury is trying to address

comment Why is a lack of oxygen fatal to cells?
You're being a bit anthropocentric, plenty of organisms get on fine without, some are even harmed by free oxygen. :P

comment Do mitochondria simply automatically convert glucose to ATP?
Mitochondria only have a handful of genes; their regulation is utterly intertwined with their host. Additionally, only the TCA (Krebs, Citric Acid...) cycle occurs within mitochondria; glycolysis occurs in the cytosol.

comment How do I get the current “camera position” in PyMol so I can reuse it in scripts?
Ah, I guess if I translated the "command line/interactive form" of the commands into the API version, I should have also kept those parenthesis that get_view returns so they're really nested (so you do pass it a tuple). Would look like cmd.set_view((1,2,3...))

comment What is the origin of “melting” in molecular genetics?
What if you just consider melting where the intermolecular forces (here, base pairing) give way?

comment Are there any plants that fix their own nitrogen?
Fun Fact: 80% of the nitrogen in human tissues was fixed synthetically via the Haber-Bosch process

comment What causes the development of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria?
@J.M. you're eluding to how calling it a "war" is a bit of a lie; reminds me of a guy on TotN talking about the "war on cancer"

comment What causes the development of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria?
@J.M. and the route taken by bacteria is to evolve/select for beta-lactamases that have activity against carbapenems, like some of the lesser-prevalent (at present) class-D enzymes, thus ensuring a continuing source of funding for our lab.
