comment Why does throat 'burn' when you've got a common cold?
Could you describe the burning sensation some more? Is it located the same spot as the soreness?

There's a small mix-up in your otherwise very nice post. The reduction potential describes the ability of a substance to be reduced. Thus oxygen does not have a low RP. In fact it has a pretty high reduction potential - it is a pretty good oxidizer. Similarly, glucose has a pretty low reduction potential. It is hard to reduce, it would much rather be oxidized. :-) High reduction potential->Strong oxidizing agent. I find it a bit counter-intuitive too.

comment Which range are the Therapeutic Indices of Currently-Prescribed Benzodiazepines in?
That was for rats as well. The therapeutical index is, in general, not suitable for quantitative comparison though. The figures may even vary wildly for one substance. It's at best a rough indicator of safety margin. Have you looked into an alternate definition, TD50/ED50? Defined for humans, where TD50 is the dose that produces a toxic response in half the test subjects.

Thanks. I have to try that derivation! :-)

Nice answer. I like the relation to entropy, as it really does help you get the bigger picture in the long run. :-)
