Jun 26, 2017 at 12:38 comment added arboviral ...although this may not be the best example; the Teas theory got a pretty cool reception at the time, as far as I can tell (this was all rather before my time).
Jun 26, 2017 at 12:35 comment added arboviral Just to remind people that science is hard (and all about making mistakes), it could be worth giving examples of one or two of the incorrect claims about the aetiological basis of AIDS (at the time and by reputable scientists, I mean, not modern denialist stuff). For example, there was a paper in the Lancet in 1983 suggesting it could have been caused by African swine fever virus (thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/…), which is... pretty different, to a virologist (to put it mildly).
Jun 22, 2017 at 3:47 comment added DRF @TonyDallimore Yeah I was hoping so, unfortunately I'm guessing they count this as an op-ed or whatever so it's not accessible even after registration. Still thank you for the link. I think I probably have the hard copy some place.
Jun 21, 2017 at 22:43 comment added Tony Dallimore @DRF The fine print for "Science AAAS" says research is free one year after publication if you register. The paper was published in 2008. I have not tried but you should be able to read it if you are willing to register

Jun 21, 2017 at 17:47 comment added iayork There is a brief, relatively dispassionate, and from my memory reasonably balanced summary of the politicking in HIV, HPV Researchers Honored, But One Scientist Is Left Out, if people don't know what we're talking about
Jun 21, 2017 at 17:03 comment added iayork Man, the politicking was so unpleasant and tedious. I really don't want to relive that.
Jun 21, 2017 at 16:36 comment added bishop Dr. Gallo would want his name listed first, in your list.
