I was determining which will have the highest diffusion rate is it the smallest agar cube like (6×6×6)mm or thinnest agar block(3×30×30)mm because I did not exactly know it the surface area to volume ratio or the size?

  • $\begingroup$ You can calculate the volume and surface for both blocks, and then calculate their surface to volume ratio. First block: $V_1=(6 \, \text{mm})^3 = 216 \, \text{mm}^3, A_1 = 6 \times (6 \, \text{mm})^2 = 216 \, \text{mm}^2$, $A_1/V_1 = 1 \, \text{mm}$. Second block: $V_2=(3\,\text{mm})\times(30 \, \text{mm})^2 = 2700 \, \text{mm}^3$, $A_2 = 2 \times (30 \, \text{mm})^2 + 4 \times (30 \, \text{mm})\times (3 \, \text{mm}) = 2160 \, \text{mm}^2$, $A_2/V_2 = 0.8 \, \text{mm}$. $\endgroup$
