I'm interested in the amount of energy input needed to indefinitely cycle some amount of matter in a closed ecosystem.

Real world data, models/theoretical limits, both are of interest to me.

    $\begingroup$ There are no closed ecosystems on Earth - except the planet itself, and maybe not even then. Think of the Sahara, plenty of energy, very little biomass. There is unlikely to be a single discrete simple answer to this as the number of potential variables is very high. Please take our tour and read-up in the help center about how we work. You'll find that here, we are expected to show the results of our own attempt to answer the question, where we looked, what we found and where we got stuck.     $\begingroup$ Just a thought but NASA has experimented with these systems, so our sister-site Space Exploration might be an alternative venue for the question. If it's a fiction-project which drives the question, then many questions of this type have turned-up on our other sister-site Worldbuilding.   • $\begingroup$ Thank you for your comments. I understand your critisism regarding initial research effort. Hopefully I will be able to edit some in. I disagree with the original question being too unruly, broad etc to be answered in a satisfactory way. I didn't expect anyone here to be able to anwer but I just couldn't help myself. Anyway I might edit/re-ask the question to fit a special case instead if I find an answer myself. $\endgroup$ Jan 9 at 17:32
