If sporopollenin is such a resistant layer, how does pollen grain lose viability, even such easily in some cases?

  • $\begingroup$ Can you be more specific? Are you arguing that sporopollenin has some property that prevents any degradation over any time period? Recall that DNA phosphodiester bonds will fall apart over time even under ideal preservation conditions! $\endgroup$
