Why is a wound much more painful when damp?

This is a very strange phenomenon.

For example:

  • I have a little wound, not painful at all. But, when it is just damp, it is much painful.
  • $\begingroup$ My guess would be that the water interacts with the wound, somehow. $\endgroup$ – Nikki Chin Apr 10 '16 at 14:55
