Tests on men who have undergone vasectomies show viable sperm in their ejaculate weeks and dozens of ejaculations after ligation of their vas deferens. How is this possible?

  1. How long does a spermatozoon live outside of testes? Many references note that ejaculated sperm can survive for up to five days inside the female reproductive tract. I can't find any references indicating longevity and associated factors within the male reproductive tract.

  2. After a vasectomy, why does it take more than one ejaculation to "clear" the male tract of sperm?
