Changes in oceanic oxygen isotope ratios (O-18 to O-16) are reflected in the shells of ancient foraminifera.

But I never hear of diatom shells being used, even though they were/are at least as abundant, right?

They used silica instead of calcium carbonate, if that makes a difference....
