Electrical synapses are known for being very fast at communicating with other neurons. (1) What I often see in articles about electrical synapses is that they are bidirectional.(1) This is seen as a strength to electrical synapses as a whole, my question is why?

If ions can flow backwards, back to the pre-synaptic neuron why would this be advantageous?
