I am curious whether there has been a study done on the effects of removing introns. Specifically, what happens if you genetically edit a eukaryote genome to no longer contain introns? Or maybe just a specific gene where the introns don't overlap with exons depending on splicing. Has any such study been conducted?

  • $\begingroup$ For eukaryotic genes, there may be very significant differences in expression levels between intron-less and intron-containing genes, where the intron-less versions have lower expression levels. The molecular mechanism is intimately connected with the working of the spliceosome (but I am not an expert). This ref might start you off?
