I understand that a connectome is a map of connections between neurons.
Would it be possible with current day technology to create a more detailed map that gives not only the connections themselves but also the strength and nature of each individual connection?
That is, would it be possible to count the number of neurotransmitter receptors on each post-synaptic neuron (or some better metric for connection strength between neurons) and the type of neurotransmitter used for each synapse?
Can this level of detail be reliably achieved for even a single neural connection? If so, what methods are used, and what would be the practical or technical difficulties of applying such methods to analyze a large number of individual neural connections?
