Literature on lag phase low specific growth rate seems invariably to assume a change in environment to which the single-cell organism must adapt before the specific growth rate reaches its maximum during the exponential phase.

However, I've not been able to locate literature on experiments that keep the environment constant except for varying the cell concentration in the growth medium. I've been searching for such research because anecdotal reports from practitioners of Chlorella cultivation consistently claim cell concentration is a major causative factor in reaching exponential phase -- perhaps more important than environmental adaptation.
