So, many closely related animals have different chromosome counts.

It would seem that most chromosome count differences lead to sterile offspring. Further, it would appear that gametes with irregular chromosome counts must be paired with other gametes with matching irregularities to pass on these differences, which feels like a unlikely scenario.

On the other hand, obviously, chromosome count differences happened. What are some explanations?
