Windl | The answer is incomplete, because at a depth of 100m the partial pressure of oxygen and nitrogen will probably kill your nerves (specifically the brain) (or at least make them inoperative). So there are special gas mixtures used then. For normal air the nitrogen-induced limit is around 56m. | |

Swimmers use goggles, goggles can't equalize pressure, divers use masks where they equalize the water pressure, it's easy to take the mask off at any depth. Opening the eyes underwater at 325 meters is fine. | |

Face and mask of the diver could never withstand such a pressure difference, meaning that the diver needed to equalize the pressure, which is normally done by taking of the mask and blowing (high-pressure) air inside. Descending so quickly, there is a chance that you can't get the mask off your face if you wait too long, meaning that pressure would build up until implosion, which would pose an enormous health risk. For this reason, such records are generally done without wearing a mask, while descending. The answer is that eyes are not the bottleneck. | |
