As for confusing a moth for a bird, you aren't the first one! This moth in the same Sphingidae family was posted just last week! And thank you to your post! Very clear picture of the moth with a good explanation

Also I don't know, how-frequent posting of identification question is considered as OK, (i.e. is there any limit on it) in this SE community, however I posted this-one because this-insect was very surprising to us... it looked like a tiny bird when it was flying.
