The assumption was that even for a single-celled, not all metabolic features have evolved in just one step. Before active transport ever evolved, organisms may have been restricted to a narrower range of habitats. So would they be restricted to bodies of fresher water? This may be a key issue in the debate whether life may evolve under the ice cover of Europa, one of Jupiter's moons. | |
