How darwins evolution works?

Let me explain ... Me and one of my friends red some articles , part of a biology book and saw a video on evolution . We then tried to explain to each other what evolution is :

My friend told me that natural selection is a thing inside the animal that mutates the DNA to make its children survive in an environment. That natural selection mutates "well" the DNA and that random mutations are not usefull (like blue eyes). But i think that is closer to Lamarks theory.

I told him that DNA from male and female shuffles and randomly mutates making a new "recipe" for this animal(adding a new characteristic or characteristics). If the new animal survives (is well suited for the environment) passes his characteristics to its children .If not it dies .And that survival thing, were nature "selects" who lives well and reproduces a lot, is called natural selection.

So is this mutation process random or it mutates DNA to make a well suited animal for an environment ?

None of my friends is a biology student ,so i cant know which explanation is correct (or at least more valid).

Id prefer you dont answer: "None of these explanations are right" but to say which one is more valid and correct mistakes they have or add more that is missing (ofcourse i only wrote summaries). But of course you can answer none is correct too ...

(Sorry for poor english)
